Carrying More Than Most
Jemma never imagined that something as simple as getting from A to B would become one of the hardest parts of daily life.
But when you’re raising two young children on your own, navigating public transport with medical appointments, specialist care, prams, bags and uncertainty, reliable transport becomes more than convenience.
It becomes stability. Breathing room. One less thing to worry about.
This month, through Cars for Good, the easyauto123 Brooklyn team are proud to support Jemma and her family with a 2017 Subaru Forester to help make daily life a little easier during an incredibly difficult chapter.
Jemma is a single mother to two young boys, aged three years and five months.
Over the past two years, she has faced challenges no parent should have to endure.
After a gas leak made her previous rental property uninhabitable, Jemma and her family were left homeless. Around the same time, she lost access to reliable transport and was later forced to resign from her job following a car accident, as she could no longer meet work requirements without a dependable way to travel.
At one stage, things became so difficult that she temporarily placed her eldest son in her mother’s care while trying to rebuild stability.
Eventually, after a period of homelessness, Jemma secured public housing through the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing. Not long after finally finding a home, she welcomed her second son into the world.
Then came another unimaginable challenge.
Her youngest son was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA Type 1), a rare genetic condition requiring ongoing specialist treatment and hospital care. Since then, Jemma has been making regular trips to Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital so her son can receive treatment, including recent gene therapy.
At the same time, her eldest son is undergoing assessment for autism and requires ongoing support appointments and care.
Every appointment. Every hospital visit. Every day-to-day responsibility has fallen solely on Jemma’s shoulders.
And through it all, she has kept going.
No complaints. No giving up. Just a determination to create a safer, more stable future for her children.
Without a car, Jemma has been relying entirely on public transport to manage hospital visits, medical appointments, support services and everyday parenting.
For Jemma, that has meant constantly planning around train timetables, delays, connections and the added pressure of moving two young children across Melbourne while navigating ongoing medical care.
It’s exhausting. Physically and emotionally. Especially when there’s no one else to share the load with.
After hearing Jemma’s story, the Brooklyn team knew they wanted to help.
There’s no simple fix for what Jemma and her family are going through, but having reliable transport can at least remove one of the daily pressures she’s been carrying on her own.
Not a solution to everything. Just one less thing to worry about.
For Jemma, we hope this vehicle helps create a little more stability during a time where life has felt anything but stable.
Whether that’s getting to hospital appointments more easily, reducing the stress surrounding day-to-day travel, or simply making life feel a little more manageable, the hope is that it provides meaningful support where it’s needed most.
From everyone at easyauto123, we’re incredibly proud to support Jemma and her boys through Cars for Good, and we wish them strength, hope and brighter days ahead.
